I guess if you want a great sound for your guitar, it probably isn’t best before you are 45. I was taught at 18, and my dad is the only guy in that class who hasn’t aged out of his skin yet.
A couple of recent stories about musicians dying young.
John Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Paul Shaffer, and Mick Jagger all died at the young age of 25 or younger on the anniversary of their passing.
It also happened to me when playing with Steve Vai.
In May, 2002, two of my favourite guitarists died suddenly. Bill Veeck, who I’ve been playing alongside for a number of years, died at the age of 53, and Steve Vai, who was a close friend of Bill’s, went on to die at the age of 56.
How does one prepare to play with a live orchestra? As a beginner, I like to play on a different instrument from the one I’m used to.
Before I can even think of playing bass or drums, I need to work out what instrument is going to produce the most impact. If I’m playing drums, I have to think “Will it make that note sound right?” If it looks like something I can play, I’ve been practicing; that’s all.
One of my goals in life is to have one of those guys tell me what instrument I can’t play. If the answer is a bass, or a banjo, I have to ask him that too.
How is it possible to travel the globe and not lose your wallet in the middle of nowhere?
I had a flight ticket the week after Christmas that went down to the final minute. It is a crazy dream but I can’t wait to tell every person who I’ve met on this journey.
What’s your favourite memory from the road? The most special one, though, would have to be the first time I met my mum, back in 1985. I’ll never forget the thrill I had to go there with my dad, who’d only lived there for six months or something. We had just gone to Europe and she’d been talking about my dad, who was like a father to me. I can’t believe I still have that memory!
