In terms of the easiest song, we’ve got the Beatles: that’s easy. That’s pretty straightforward.
That’s easy to play, but there are many different kinds of melodies in there …
Yes, but there are probably more than you realize, because we all have to learn a lot when we first start out.
Do you keep in touch with any of your students and see what they do?
We keep in touch through the web so I don’t see people and I don’t see them. I talk to them about what they got up to. There are a number of music students I talk to, some of them in their early 20s, and I like to keep up with their work. But you are always free to go at it your way as you will in life. If I like a lot of things I might go to the studio and make it into a song and I might not. This is just my way, so just go at it whatever you might like. If you have a particular interest or a particular area of expertise you want to explore further, there are plenty of people out there with that interest. The thing of it is, when you start playing you are always making decisions of what’s easy to learn and what’s harder. The more you learn about it the easier it is to learn, the harder it’s going to be just because you don’t have to make a decision of what to study. We learn by watching others, in particular my son, and his son …
I see you playing along to Neil Young’s We Are The Champions now on YouTube. That was the first time you’d played in an audience that was interested.
Yes, we were out of town for a long time when we were making We Are The Champions.
Do you still have friends out in town?
No, not anymore. I am a lot nearer to the kids now. I met my son, but I didn’t see him [in the audience.] I think he went out with friends, but he hasn’t seen me since last Wednesday, so I have not, to be quite honest, been around as much. You can’t keep up with a lot of a guy’s kids.
It’s an age thing, isn’t it?
Yes, well, you are young, but you have to have a certain experience with your kids in order to have a family, to keep the family together.
