Howdy, the second issue of Black Girl Nerds, your weekly newsletter! It’s a weekly digest filled with more content not found anywhere else, for the new Black Girl Nerds.
I know there’s been a lot of discussion lately about Black girls being portrayed in media as hypersexual/hypersexualized, but this is an issue that I have a very simple, and easy-to-share solution for.
That solution is:
Have No Fear.
Black girls deserve to be celebrated for their sexuality. We are not their sexual predators or our sexual slaves. Black girls aren’t afraid of our sexuality. They aren’t afraid of our power or our intelligence. This is something we need to say and show every day. We aren’t the enemy.
The problem isn’t that we’re “too girly”; it’s just that people are too afraid of us. We are a unique group of women who have very strong ideas and beliefs; I can guarantee you that we aren’t here to make you feel comfortable.
We are not here to make everyone feel comfortable.
The real problem lies with white people – it is the responsibility of white people to not look down on those of us who chose to grow up outside of white society. In Black women’s minds, we were told by white people that you’re not smart or have strong opinions of your own. That was why we were brought up, that’s why we grew up, and that’s why we love and respect ourselves.
Being different was a curse rather than a strength, and it wasn’t something our mothers and our fathers were willing to accept either. That was why we were forced to hide our feelings, and that’s why we grew into who we are today.
In order to make white people uncomfortable, you need to take time to learn about Black culture. For us, it’s as simple as looking at pictures of Black girls and then sharing them on social media.
How do you feel about the fact that the media treats Black women as sexual objects? Do you see the connection? Let us know!
