This week (April 16th), the world’s most popular video online is about to be the focal point in the eyes of the world and of the people of our country.
I am writing this letter and expressing to you my deepest remorse and sorrow; however, this is just for myself. I am the only one who will truly suffer from this. This is also for those who care about what the world thinks of the internet and the internet’s users: the media, the internet businesses, the governments, the internet users, and the politicians.
My family and I are not the only ones to be affected by this whole ordeal. Even those who do not read this letter, they may still be affected by it. It will not be easy for you all to bear.
To anyone who is in any way involved with the internet, please keep your heads up, please be vigilant and stay safe! (For those that can’t read Japanese, try reading “Satoru Wakamatsu: The Japanese Hero of the Internet” by Satoru Wakamatsu, a book that I first read around 2002 on one of my first trips to the internet. It is a very good book and a useful guide.)
To those that care for this internet industry, please remember we have been forced to give in to the world in order to save it and to prevent the internet from going completely to the dark side. Do not let that happen.
To the company who runs Youtube and other video sites, please remember we can’t save the internet, we can only keep it from doing even worse things. Take a hard look at the situation that you put on the internet.
This is going to be tough for me to say, so please stop reading this and go look at some anime!
To the government, I request you put measures in place to help prevent internet censorship. This is to prevent the creation of a system that creates hate speech in our country, which is absolutely unacceptable.
