As with all things, there are many “best” songs in the world. Some people pick a song that’s going to be a smash hit, they put it on the radio, and it starts to be a classic. The song you have started out with is your “standard.” Once music gets stale, people stop listening to it. The standard can also be the standard for others.
“I really would like to play the song you played, but I can’t.” “Why?” “I don’t know.”
“The song you play now has all these different songs out there.” “Why do you pick only one?”
People are really good at putting down your standard, and if you’re the one picking the songs, you’re the one taking away the “special.”
“I really like the song you’ve chosen… but my band’s standard is so great! Why do I have to stick with it?”
People really love their standard. It’s like a standard of the band’s life and the people around. In a band, it’s like the standard of the group. Just pick one song from your list and stick with it.
How does the song you’re playing matter?
Some songs are amazing because they fit the song you play really well. You can listen to a song and think, “I remember liking that part of this song!” There’s nothing wrong with that. You don’t have to stick with your standard. Just pick a song, and play it.
But many are so great because people are listening to them in a way you didn’t originally intend.
“I played this song really well when I wrote it…” How should I play it? When and why was the song written? What’s the music for? How is this an appropriate use of it?
The song shouldn’t be written specifically for the song. That song could have ended up a B-side with “Love is a Battlefield.” If the song is good, then you should be doing it. It’s the way it should go. The song should be an essential piece of your music.
