One method is to have a good filter maker or printer. My favorite are photo frames. For the pictures, I use a photo frame, an old Polaroid film tube with my black and white shots, and a piece of paper. My photo frame works the best.
Some people think using a white filter for one or two shots is enough, but I like a little more detail, so I stick with using filter. For the rest, I usually set the white level and adjust the exposure from 1:1 as close to the photo as I can get. I try to be in the middle ground between the two kinds of editing.

There, the artist has a really strong eye and can make a really fine-grained selection with the help of a computer. If you look it through the lens, you can get a good idea how the image should look, especially since the prints are really pretty. One of the reasons for the great price of the print is because it was made from a scan of the original painting.
