No, the cost is the cost of the book. If you want someone to take over your book and fix things, that’s what you need. It’s just a way to keep it looking fresh. I think about how I’m going to pay, and if we’re on the same budget as the editor, it’s probably no problem. That means you would have to pay something to have the editor work on the book, so I’ve gotten that figured out now.
You’re an active writer, and you’ve done a lot of writing online. Have you learned lessons from that?
I’m an editor first. If I want to work for someone else, I’ll make the payment and then I’ll work on their material if they ask me. I don’t feel bad because when you’re doing digital, it’s usually about a day to a week. They’re like, “I have no idea what you’re doing.” It was about a year of me working on my website, and at first, I didn’t understand it, because I didn’t think about all the stuff I was doing online. I’ve come to the realization that I’m writing so much online now that it’s the only way to do it. As long as you’re making something interesting, people will want to read it. I’ll be on Tumblr for two years and people will still want to check what I’m doing. They’ll find out that I did it, that I’m making it, that it’s good. It’s something I can build my own brand on.
This is a long but well-written review of the new version of a popular book which has been written by a very good philosopher, but probably because I didn’t read it first, I don’t understand much of what he says or how he thinks about the way that things should be.
For example, he says that a man should never “reject what is important”, a statement that seems as valid today as it did fifty or 100 years ago but is not the same at all as he’s stating now. I agree that he’s never claimed to “reject what is important”, or even to be saying that. (He even says more explicitly in this recent book a couple of times that there is no such thing as “important”, or that there’s one thing that is important, and that another thing is important.)
