No, if you want to use other programs than Photoshop and Illustrator you have to pay the subscription fees. However, there are some free software utilities for Photoshop and Illustrator that you can install for free or on a commercial license to allow you to use other programs.
Do you have a paid version?
Yes, Photoshop CC for Mac is completely free, unless you want the Pro version. But this is an extremely limited version, and only comes with a few tools and a custom interface. In addition to this, you have to pay an administrative license, which is also a limited version. The Creative Cloud (creative cloud.com), which allows you to use Photoshop CC in your commercial work, is free for non-commercial use.

“A new study in Nature Climate Change has found that as temperatures climb in the summer, the amount of sunlight available to plants in our native rainforest shrinks.” (I just remembered this, too.)
It turns out that the summer heat is not so good at keeping our plants alive, especially after we’ve grown them too tall.
There’s this cool article about this in the journal Environmental Biology by Jennifer Eissel. Eissel’s group studied the effect of drought-induced tree mortality on seedling growth and yield in a temperate rainforest. She found that, after the trees have grown tall, drought can be a problem even when there’s sufficient light.
