You have to start the process with a beginning. The beginning is the beginning. The beginning of any project is the start. If you work on something, you always start with the beginning. So, the beginning is always critical.
The beginning of the writing process has three stages.
Solving: the first stage of writing is to figure out how to write.
Writing: the second stage of writing is to write something.
Writing on the page: the third stage of writing is to write on the page.
How does writing on the page differ from writing on the page? First of all, in the writing stage the writer has a clear idea of what the story is going to be: how it’s going to go, who we’re going to be. And that seems like a good place to start.
However, the writing stage can be messy and time consuming, especially if you’re just starting out with writing. That is, of course, assuming that you already have a story idea.
So let’s break it down.
Writing at the beginning is just figuring out how to write. It’s an exercise in finding your idea and letting your head start to spin.
Writing on the page is the same idea in reverse, but the writing stage is just getting it written. The process isn’t about telling your head to quit, it’s about getting it out there and seeing if someone wants to read it.
At first this may seem like a lot to take in, but there’s still a lot going on.
Write a sentence. Write ten sentences until you’re really writing something.
Write one page. Get an idea for a story, or a chapter.
Write the first draft of your work.
Write as many pages as you can. This will feel easier in the future.
Write every week or every other week. After you get the work in, you can stop.
Write every weekend, every other weekend, and whenever a friend invites you.
Write to check in. Write to keep your head spinning, write to see if it’s going to stick.
Read other writers before you. You may find it helps to read what others have done.
The key to writing well on the page is to find your ideas the best way possible and then find the best way to get your ideas to me.
