It used to be that an editor would add layers and crop and modify as well as do editing of other images. The new generation of editing tools in Photoshop are more like being able to add images and edit them in real time that is really exciting and that’s what we’re all working towards.
Why are photographers doing their own editing now?
They don’t have too many of the expensive plugins that most editing professionals used long ago. If they need to make changes to a single image, it’s usually enough. If they find they want to change the image, the editing tools are much lighter but still very powerful. I don’t think we’ll see that kind of workflow happen much in the digital era, but we’ll see a lot more of that in the coming years.
What are the pros and cons, and where do you see the industry headed next?
It really depends on your needs in editing your photos and what type of editing you’re wanting to do. There is a lot available and it all depends on your budget and what you want to do and the workflow you want to use.
I have seen editing programs go mainstream, like a photo-editing program that’s been popular for the last five or six years. I think a lot of them still don’t give you that level of control that you might want. If you want to do professional quality editing and are willing to pay for it and know how to use it, editing software has come a long way.
The big advantage of Photoshop is that you can do almost everything digitally. You can get any sort of color grading, you can get almost any shape you want, and you can add text effects. For some people, that’s what they need, but you also need to know how to use it. I would expect to see a lot of editing software that’s more like being a professional editing software, and it’s still not there yet.
With all of these tools, where do you think the image industry will go?
As the digital age develops, I think more and more professional photographers will be putting their images online. If you can find out what you want to do with your photo, you can use Photoshop and its editing tools to achieve that. Once that happens, I think more and more people won’t have to buy Photoshop and other programs, they’ll be able to get it all online and use the tools they need to create or edit.
