Ethics photography is the artistic art of depicting the ethical choices that are necessary or advisable in the circumstances in which you will see your subjects. This is done by drawing or painting, writing or sculpting, or through a combination of the above. It is not limited to human subjects, animals or buildings.

Ethics photography is the ability to communicate the ethical principles to oneself or to others. For example, it is not acceptable for you to kill any or all of your fellow animal subjects – not even in self-defense – if doing so is necessary to fulfill an altruistic task that you would not otherwise take part in.

Ethics photography is an art form that is about how ethical you are in your choices and actions with the animals in your photos, and with other humans. It may be different for the different circumstances. For example, shooting portraits of people you know personally or strangers is ethical photography, as is photography of people or animals from a distance – if what you are shooting is an individual, you cannot use ethical photography to show how a stranger could be ethical if your relationship to the subject is a personal one. But if what you are photographing is a large group of people, you must consider the ethical situation.

Do you photograph only good animals to protect them? Or do you get creative about what is safe for the animals?

Good animals are the ones in the best light, and good photographs are typically those made by subjects who are well behaved. Good subjects for photos are those that have been exposed to their natural, non-aggressive, non-domesticated state, have been well cared for, or who have no other reason to be outside the camera’s view. It is important to remember the difference between good and acceptable.

It is also important to consider when photographing only dogs and cats – those creatures are generally more interesting to many people – in light conditions that can be hazardous to them. In extreme cases – such as in the case of some animal trafficking and/or animal abuse situations – you must avoid photographing people and dogs who can no longer survive outside due to the actions of the photographers. In such cases, it is usually the ethical obligation of the photographer to remove the subjects from the scene after shooting or otherwise ensuring that they will not suffer harm in a way that jeopardizes the rights or freedoms of other people or animal subjects.
