Do you want to learn English?
If you say yes to that, you’re an English teacher: you go to college to learn English and then you go to work and teach English to Americans. Then you teach some English and you go home but you teach in the American classrooms and you do the math, and then you make some money, and then you become a teacher again, sometimes you teach English in the States and then you go to a university, and here you are teaching English with no job prospects, you don’t need to spend a year in the States to figure out that you don’t know how to speak English and that you should give yourself a shot to speak English, to learn English, and then you go to work in America. That is what this job really is.
So, what is the difference between teaching English in a school and teaching English in America?
The answer is simple. In a school, you can teach English to students who go there. You go to school because you are not qualified for teaching. You don’t know how to speak American or what the school district’s standard are. In a school, you’re going to teach people who are in the same circumstance.
So you don’t need to know how to speak American.
We are going to teach English to those who are in the same situation, and in doing so to them we are going to strengthen that English so that they’re less likely to be left behind. For the other 95 percent of them, we’re going to teach them American because we don’t know how to speak American and we want to keep them there. Because if we don’t keep them there, the children might not speak English, so it makes sense to stay here.
Right away, you’ve got this big distinction. At your place, there are lots of bilinguals and they’re not working to make their own future. But you’re going in there like a tourist on vacation, doing jobs that you would be trained for in a school – teaching English, teaching math, reading books, reading newspapers. And so they all learn American, you start in a classroom and they start in kindergarten and then they get to the fourth edition of the Common Core standards, where students are expected to learn three core subjects: science, social studies, and writing.
