They’re supposed to be tight…
There’s so much information in the first 5 seconds of watching your first lesson, that you’ll quickly lose sight of most of what you’ll learn. There are some very basic tips you need to know in the beginning to keep the learning process from getting stuck in the gutter.
Here are the top tips for beginners that you can apply immediately before you watch this video:
1. Don’t let your students hear you call your instrument a “guitar” or a “banjo”
If you’ve ever used a violin or viola, then you’ll have noticed that your students may try and imitate it while you are playing them. It’s not helpful.
Instead, your best bet is to identify the instrument that your students are playing right now. Don’t try to imitate any instruments other than your favourite ones.
2. Get the right strings to your instrument
Your guitar is a one-string instrument. You need three strings to produce the basic tonal sound that comes from playing the instrument as a one string instrument. These four strings contain the fundamental (and most melodic) notes in the chord.
When you’re recording guitar lessons, you’ll notice that we play notes at an extremely rapid pace. Most of us will think of these notes as a guitar “string” as well. However, your bass and oboe strings (and all bass) are not one-string instruments.
You need to change this thinking about your instruments. They are instruments that you play by strumming an instrument string and the “string” is the instrument it produces the chord notes from.
We’ve all got a guitar string that we’d like to play like a one-string instrument. However, it’s going to take work to strum the same five strings without any major problems.
As my students will soon discover, strumming your instrument at a steady clip for a period of time is the best way to work on improving your skill at playing the instrument.
3. Watch out for the mistakes!
In this first lesson, we focused on some basic principles that every musician should know about. The next step is making sure that it’s a learning tool that they’re using.
Mistakes happen. It doesn’t matter how smart you are. You’re going to get yourself into a lot of trouble or at the very least, give your students errors.
