The solution to all this is: get some practice and listen to some great music. When I was in high school, I played my old ukulele and it was nothing short of a miracle. I knew a little bit of stringed music, and when I started finger picking it gave me the ability to play all kinds of different notes simultaneously without any kind of problem whatsoever. It’s like having a second hand, and it’s so much fun! I would be sitting on a chair watching the music on the TV, and it would just be magic. When I went to school, I used a piano for a long time. It’s still my favorite instrument. I love the sound of it. It’s definitely good for playing fingerpicking. You can pick a little more easily on this instrument, because of the low hand position for playing, and you can also pick more easily with the right hand.
How long did you practice playing in the lower register.
I started slow and got stronger quickly. I got so good at fingerpicking, I got back on the piano and started playing real well. I didn’t let in any time off and when I played on that piano, I could feel my fingers in tune, and it was great. I was hooked. And in 2003 I started playing in the upper register again, but I had the same thing. I was never playing in a big orchestra, and I didn’t feel it was the best for me because I can pick in any situation, I don’t have to be in a big sound. This music I’m doing now, with these strings, I don’t have to really be the center of attention and it doesn’t have to be the most important thing in the world. There are so many other things I’m playing that I could be playing and not have to worry about the music. At first I didn’t think I could, but now I can feel my fingers in tune, and the music’s perfect.
There’s a whole new generation coming up that knows how guitar works and how you play. What’s your take on that?
That’s what makes so much difference. You can’t compare a new guitar player to a guitar player in their 60s. Because one day they might get their hands on a Gibson. They might have their second hand, and they’ll do something new. They might take a bass and throw it on and do something different.
