Size chart is a bit confusing. Most are 10 and smaller, but some are 12″ and larger. The most common size is 10, with most being 9.5″.
For the longest time I was playing with some larger 10″ ukuleles, and now I’m looking around at smaller sizes. I’m just finding an old one or two that I haven’t played in a while.
Here’s the most common sizes I’ve encountered; 10, 10-23 (6″ length), 10-22 (4″ length), 10-19 (3″ length), 9 and 2.5″ length
The length is only a portion of the total weight, so the weight will vary with the instrument. I am using 9″ of strings, so I’m looking for a medium in length that’s 2″ of string thickness, (or 2″ under the bridge).
What are some pointers?
Don’t pick too fast on the neck
It’s very important to get the feel for the sound before fretting
If you pick too fast it will be too loud
Don’t do it over and over, use it once or twice, it’s not really important.
Practice makes perfect, try to listen to this demo before picking
If I am taking a break I often will pick more quickly, and I only take breaks when I am really playing
Some say to keep it simple. I don’t disagree, it is important to keep the note sounds and tempo tight. Don’t let the notes drift away and try to keep the rhythm intact.
If you make small mistakes they can become major. So it’s crucial to learn from them.
How long to warm up before playing
I don’t have a ton of experience, but I think about 3-5 sec. for a normal warm up
If I don’t warm up the notes I will become a pick spinner; you will feel the string pulling on the string on the next fret, and you wont have a good grip.
I have learned that a light warm up sets the tone well and will help maintain the tension of the strings and help the picking action
I think a good warm up session is around 5-10 min, no more than 25 minutes. I have found it best to play around 1hr or so before warm ups.
My pick practice time now is around 200-300 min, then I have breaks in between.
