According to recent government statistics posted by the Department of Homeland Security, 10.6 million illegal immigrants were in the country as of Feb. 1, 2013, down from 11.0 million two years ago and 6.1 million in 2009. There are an estimated 11.1 million U.S. residents who are legal residents, including 671,000 legal permanent residents, 576,000 foreign students, and 39,000 green card holders.
Meanwhile, the number of lawful permanent residents in the United States has grown significantly. In the first half of 2013, the official count increased by 3.1 million from the second quarter of 2012. As a percentage of population, non-immigrants are rising rapidly.
Overall, the number of legal citizenships issued by the U.S. government has increased steadily over the last six years. The number of green cards issued by the U.S. government has risen from a total of 5,000 in 2002 to 19,500 in 2012. However, the total number of green cards issued fell between October 2010 and July 2012, to less than 4,500.
