How much are ukuleles worth?
The price can vary widely depending a great deal on the instrument. There are two main types of ukuleles; the conventional and the high end.
Conventional ukuleles are made up of wood and some binding (the glue that holds parts together). They are usually constructed such that their necks are straight or slightly bent but don’t require any extra adjustment. The necks can be made out of wood or laminated plastic.
As far as tuning is concerned ukuleles are very versatile. The more conventional ukuleles have a tuning bar that can hold a string between the 5th and 7th frets and they will be able to adjust to any tuning you want. As for fret sizes, conventional ukuleles generally come in two flavours – small and large – but there is at one point a separate entry for a larger ukulele called the Large Ukulele.
High end Ukuleles are made by some of the top manufacturers all around the world and come with many special features. They are constructed with premium materials and are very expensive to produce. The most expensive instrument made by Gibson is an instrument called the ‘Sonic’.
What makes a ukulele a good ukulele?
The first thing to mention is that any instrument needs to be good in terms of sound. You are looking for a ukulele that plays well and is enjoyable to play. A great sound is only half of the equation and that is also why the price range of ukuleles also vary wildly. For example a good ukulele is only worth about £100-150 depending on the instrument type and the finish. You will never find a ukulele that plays a higher note than your finger or which is easily adjusted to suit any musical style. It has to be an inexpensive or a “someday” ukulele.
That leaves you with an important part of the equation; the sound quality. Some instruments can sound pretty good, but often the sound quality is down to the tunings that go with them and the materials that go into them. Some of the larger ukuleles are made from plastic and can’t play high notes. For this reason they are often not worth buying unless they are the ultimate value purchase. Some are good for the money but have poor quality sound. For this reason they tend to cost more than others.
