Here are some basic things to know for the new ukulele beginner if you want to learn the instrument.
Are you ready to learn how to play on a ukulele?
This will come as a surprise to some people, but it absolutely will. The basic steps for getting from “no knowledge” to being able to play are as follows:
1. Make you ear a little more receptive
“The first lesson, if you make your eardrum receptive while you play and practice, it will be easier to hear notes and make them sound,” said Dr. Bill Bittner, an audio engineer and audio educator by day. Bittner was the co-founder of the Audio Academy in Chicago and he’s the author of six books on teaching audio and music. The process may seem daunting, but it’s a wonderful way to get the ball rolling. Here’s how Bittner explains it:
In order to be able to play a single note on a ukulele, you must have a good ear and some practice. That’s what this book is all about. When you begin practicing, you’ll hear a lot of things – not just the note you’re playing, but also where that note is on the fretboard and with what instruments. This is a great place to start. Once you’re a good ear for the notes on the fretboard, and you know where the notes are, it’s easier for you to play and teach yourself to play.
Bittner stresses the importance of making the ear receptive as the first step. This is why he recommends you start with a ukulele, not a guitar, where you can focus on getting familiar with chord progressions and fingerings. So if you don’t already own a ukulele, or you’ve never owned one before, but you want to learn a little, Bittner recommends starting with a ukulele because it will give you the opportunity to get a good ear for chords and fingering and a good practice routine. It will also give you a good practice routine and you’ll be motivated to practice.
Bittner says: “If you have the time, I recommend that you get yourself into the habit of practicing every day.”
