I would like to get it straight (laughs) with you, what is the average skill level of sax players of the modern age and what do they perform? I will say that it is generally considered to be a skill of the beginner level – beginner is not necessarily a bad thing but for me it is very important, even if you are not a seasoned player and you’re coming to this topic (laughs). There is only the beginner level in jazz, no matter how experienced you are compared to your teacher or even the teacher you’re teaching. So I have two theories. One, there is a very simple way to understand this. This is the theory that people, once you’ve mastered the technique and become proficient and advanced, begin to look for and find more difficult patterns and to be more interested in the more difficult things. They feel pressure to do it better. I will give another example. I had the pleasure to play with a number of professional musicians in Paris. If we say that for each type of jazz there are certain kinds of saxophone playing, they might make some claim such as “A good player, a good singer, a player of good timbre, a good singer”, and “Well, this is an easy thing for me to do.” But actually people have to practice and discover for themselves. I understand that for example, there are some things that a guitar player does that are not easy to perform. These things are quite a bit harder. But, for the saxophone, there is no substitute for practice. And even if you’re able to go out and play in the field or on a public performance, don’t take the time to practice before the performance.
