I don’t know that it is because it is easy. This is really an instrument that needs to be practised for a while. There are no easy notes, no one way of expressing what you are doing. You have to be very close to your music for something to be a success. It is an instrument for real performance, not to do exercises or just to listen to other people play.
Is it a good instrument for students?
I love it for students. I’m a believer that the instrument should be an instrument you have to learn the technical aspects yourself. This can take quite a while. But if your teacher knows what you can or can’t do you will have a better idea of the instrument. So when a student wants to learn a new instrument, he may find a good teacher and do it for him. Maybe the teacher will have more of a knowledge of the classical world rather than what a student wants, or maybe the student will decide to move to another area.
Is it an instrument to go to festivals?
I like to go to festivals, it seems to me that playing a piano is a really good way of relaxing your mind and listening to the music. And if people like music, it’s an enjoyable experience. But I think that playing a piano is just a lot longer than playing guitar. You spend time studying the piano, and then you play a piece of music. It’s a bit more effort to be able to go out and play with other people in a festival.
You play two ukuleles now. What is the best one?
It is not really the one I have just yet, but it is the model I have always been using. I played the ukulele for a while at the end of college and it has been my instrument all these years.
I played the ukulele at the end of college! Do you play it any more?
I don’t play it anymore, because it’s too old and the keys feel too old and the notes sound awkward and difficult.
Do you have a story from your childhood?
My aunt has always told the story about how she was taught to play the ukulele by her father. It was at the age of four when she was learning how to play, she was very young. In fact, his mother was doing the same thing. But she always said that as soon as you put on the guitar the world opens up
