“The problem that I see is you are trying to figure out a way to give people a way to get through a crisis and the next question I am answering is if you give people a way to get through a crisis, that has to be the right way at the end of the day and you can’t give people a way to get around this problem of not having a way to get through a crisis,” said John Kasich, the governor of Ohio and a presidential candidate.
Mr. Kasich’s comments follow weeks of criticism of Mr. Rubio for his lack of an answer about the Republican Party’s future and its nominee, based largely on the fact that Mr. Rubio was campaigning for other Republican candidates this week in part because his son was born without a face but has not yet said how he will handle the Trump controversy.
Mr. Kasich, the governor of Ohio and a presidential candidate and his running mate, is expected to announce his 2016 White House bid on Friday morning at the Ronald Reagan Library in Simi Valley, Calif.
Mr. Kasich also sought to downplay expectations regarding the GOP convention, stating only that he does not “care” whether Mr. Trump will be on the convention’s agenda. A spokesman later told The Wall Street Journal that Mr. Kasich “will be speaking on the topic of the convention, but nothing is planned at this point.”
Mr. Kasich did not mention Mr. Rubio at his Thursday press conference, but when asked whether he would like to be Mr. Trump’s running mate, Mr. Kasich said: “I certainly would love to do it.”
