“I didn’t make any ventriloquism,” he tells me. “I did two lines that I was thinking of putting out on YouTube, where I was just a kid and I was just saying stuff. That took about five minutes.”
By the time he had the “I’m a fanboy and I’m a geek,” routine down, Bennett’s audience had grown considerably, and he had begun drawing from his own life in a new, more adult direction. He now has a website dedicated to the art and performance of ventriloquism and is on a speaking tour around the United States.
On the surface, Bennett could hardly be called a geek. He’s six-feet tall and around 300 pounds, with stubby, wiry hair that is often mussed. He’s a nerd, yes, but he is not a nerdy nerd. He is a nerd who finds his audience, has them on his side, and makes them his. And because he is so adept at playing the part, it’s almost impossible for him to imagine himself without an audience, just as it’s just impossible for me to conceive myself without a girlfriend.
“I’ve always been obsessed with what happens to the world when it’s left to itself,” he says. “People love things that are big in the world. I love things that are small.”
It was as a teen-ager, he would often listen to classic rock shows on the radio, which were full of stories about strange people who lived in the dark depths of space. He would read books about how they lived their day-to-day lives, how they made their living. His parents never quite understood the depth of his fascination. His mother was a college professor and his father was a successful commercial real-estate developer. “They just got mad because they thought I had no friends,” he recalls. “My dad said that he wanted me to have something to do, so I asked him how he paid for my dorm room, and he said that it was from donations, and when it was time for bed he’d say, ‘Bring me a big sandwich.'”
