I haven’t studied this and can only say that we have no idea. Perhaps he did! A lot of people know he did. There are many people in the world, it’s true—I’m one of them—who don’t do it, but don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing. I personally think it’s really cool, which is why I don’t do it. I didn’t start out by saying “I’ll do it if you do it.” I’m not a particularly great ventriloquist; I guess it’s my thing, actually. I’m a good performer but I don’t have great talent or a specific method—I’m just good at acting.
I feel like that’s what makes ventriloquism so attractive. I think that there are good people out there who are good at it and some terrible people who are bad at it, and even a great ventriloquist could screw up. I think it’s the magic of it: The person has a good technique and we all have the right skill, and then with a good combination of technique and emotion it’s a magical thing. I don’t think it’s harmful. It’s all about technique and emotion, though, and a lot of people have really excellent technique while having really terrible feelings, the exact opposite of good. And I think a person’s ability to feel is, in a sense, the least important thing, and that is why it’s nice to have both. And I feel as though there are several people who, for various reasons, lack that talent that I feel want to try ventriloquising, perhaps because they are afraid; because they have a kind of a stigmatic quality, or whatever.
You mentioned “The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” Can you give more information?
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly is a musical about the history of ventriloquism in America, and about an awful lot of its history. It’s actually a play, but the musical is, in fact, written at one point to be a script, that the director and producer didn’t want. (The musical opened in 2011 and has since been performed, but the movie is being developed into a TV series in 2013.) I haven’t read the script myself, so I haven’t been able to evaluate it in any detail, but I know this: A lot of the original cast has passed away and, in particular, I didn’t even know
