The first step to any new musical technique is being able to hear it clearly in front of you – if you’re not familiar with a musical technique, or if there aren’t many people or if there’s not a place in which to practice it. I learned how to ventriloquism in a small room in front of a piano, so it took time to fully understand how it works and how it is done. Even so, I was able to teach myself to ventriloquism.
How do beginners learn how to “play” a musical instrument?
By playing a few instruments, and by learning how to play these at a pace suitable for beginners. The best way to learn how to play is to play the instruments and practice playing them for a few minutes to learn basic techniques and skills and how to move around your instrument by making small adjustments. You might start out with a piano, a violin, flute, or banjo, or a few other simple instruments, and then gradually move up in difficulty to more complex ones as your skills grow.
Do I need a classical background to start ventriloquising?
The idea of ventriloquism is to make the vocal passages of a song or piece louder than the rest of the piece. This process of “playing louder” in the direction of the vocal line is known as “loudness”. I think a classical background is an important part of a beginner’s learning of ventriloquism.
How quickly would it be to become skilled at ventriloquism?
It varies greatly depending on the skill level you are at with a particular ventriloquism technique, so it will take practice. I once said to one of my students that “practice makes perfect” – this is a phrase that is commonly said by people who are interested in learning how well they can “sing”. Practice means that you can practice until you feel confident with what you can do to achieve certain goals, without having to stop the practice when you feel you are not good enough. Ventriloquists can, and should, strive for perfection.
How do I practice ventriloquism?
Although not everyone needs an instrument, many students of ventriloquism will benefit from using simple instruments. My favorite examples are the Banjolele and the Banjo, both of which are easy to learn and play.
