The first step is simply to pick a voice that you like. There are many things you can do including a voice set, or you can use the free VoiceMaker tool. My favorite is a free version – the Free Voice Builder – that has a few cool features such as a filter tool which can make your voice sound like a bird, or you can even create your own voice. The free version includes a free test version of the tool, so if you have a voice you really, REALLY love, it might be the right tool for you.
After choosing a voice, the tool will load and prompt you to select your accent or dialect. I like to use the “dialects” option. The choice on this screen appears based on an American, British and Canadian accent, so this will help get you started.
For the US, choose a US English accent. I know, it sounds strange but it isn’t impossible in the US. In terms of dialect, my parents grew up in Brooklyn so my parents often speak the way I do so, especially in the UK – it just fits my speech.
Choose which character the voice will try to speak for you or pick some other character you would like. The tool gives you a list of characters. It starts with the most common. Next up we have characters from the TV universe which include characters we know and love from the likes of Sherlock, Dexter, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Xena: Warrior Princess. It’ll also help you pick characters from the TV and Movies genres.
After that it’ll give you the option of playing your character, or choosing “none.” You may prefer to have no voice at all if you’re doing some voice-acting. Choose “none” if you have no expectations, but want to have a voice.
Next you have to choose the time period you’d like to do the voice over and how long you’d like that voice to last. If you’re wanting to do a voice over for a long time, you’d pick 1 hour or more. It gives you the options of a single voice, or 2 lines and you have the choice between “one” or “many” lines of dialogue. So, with the “many” option, I’d like to have a character say that I know and love, but would rather hear a couple short lines of dialogue.
Finally you select your character and they start to take the stage.
