I first tried this in 2005 at a big event and decided that as a gag I should teach the audience how to make a sock puppet mouth using a pair of tweezers. That first version worked fine, but I was still using a long wooden fork, and a piece of wood, for the mouth. I also forgot how easy it was to cut out two eyes with a knife and use a pair of tweezers to remove the bottom of the mouth. I finally realized this a few years ago when I was cleaning out a drawer after selling a used pair of knifes I had given away (in the event that my sock puppet would kill me). There was a plastic sock in the drawer that looked just like one of the other socks I had given away — but was much heavier. Then this happened:
“It worked!”
So I began searching for an alternative to the usual wooden spoon handles. I looked for one with a metal nose ring or something similar that would have a small hole in the middle for a finger (there are some cheap ones out there, but they don’t really look like anything). I found a pair of stainless steel knifes I found in a local hardware store and that seemed like the right combination — but they were in the kids section. The knife I had at the time was too strong, anyway, especially when I had to cut the knob. So I bought a different knife, and another, and another. I still have the original pair (I’ll put a link to the pictures I took below in the comments section!), but they are out of production.
I think a person should have enough skill in shaping a face to be considered a good puppet actor, but not too little, to be considered someone with a pretty good costume and makeup skills.
And then one day, I found the thing that solves my problems. And if you can’t figure out how to make a sock puppet mouth, your socks should never get to me. 🙂
My latest trick, however, is the most challenging one I ever had to learn. It’s the hardest trick I have to teach — to be truly successful, and also to teach others how to do it. And it is so hard that I will not even mention it in this article.
And I will be very frank. The first day I tried to teach this to people, almost everyone was impressed — and most were quite surprised.
