So how do you do it? If you’ve got a stuffed bird or a stuffed gorilla then you’ve got the basic idea. But you do need to have a puppet that has all the movement, which isn’t always easy to come by. In addition, you’ve got a lot of time. You’ll need some pieces from your stash or a friend’s.
First, you’ll need to cut out the wings. If the wings on your stuffed animal are a little large, go ahead and cut them out. Once you’re done, cut out the legs. They’ll be easier this way. You can do this if you have a lot of spare wings or legs – just cut them out. You want them to still have some surface area so that the glue has room to work.
When you get to the bottom of the bird or gorilla, you’re about to be on a real sticky situation. Use your cutting board to cut them out while trying to keep the pieces close together. You can also use a small razor blade as a very sharp knife.
Next, glue the wings in place, making sure they glue together properly. You don’t want glue to leak on to their body. Also, don’t glue pieces together that won’t fit inside. You can also use a tiny amount of fabric tape over the joint to prevent the edges from cracking up.
The final step is to take the whole thing apart and make it work again. This is pretty simple – take the head, neck and legs and glue it together. You can also glue the other two parts, the head, back and wings back together at this point too.
Make sure you remove the string from the head to keep it from tearing up. Also, try not to break the limbs.
All done! Now it’s just a matter of turning around and putting the piece back on for the first time.
