What’s the difference between a “female ventriloquist” and a “male”?
Female ventriloquists have a voice. Male ventriloquists have an instrument or two that resemble vocal chords. They don’t really have a voice, only to imitate it.
Where do female ventriloquists’ voices come from?
In part from the female’s ovaries, but it probably also has to do with the fact that female ventriloquists usually don’t get an amenorrhea (not getting an abortion) until after puberty.
Why is it called a “male” ventriloquist? Why is “vagina” a bad word for an instrument/personality?
Women’s voices are soft and delicate. While male voices are loud and powerful, and often are accompanied by aggressive language, it is often thought that the instrument is used to attract attention and thus be heard by men. It is often a compliment to the instrument or to the speaker if the instrument being used is a female voice, since those are thought to be soft and delicate. Female ventriloquists do have a masculine voice.
Are female ventriloquists considered more dangerous than their male counterparts?
Yes. Both voice and instrument can be dangerous. In the 1940’s, the ventriloquist who killed a little girl was convicted of homicide, as was one of the ventriloquist who performed the murders and killed a small boy. And of course, sometimes female ventriloquists are killed by their own instruments, or by their husbands (fathers) or by other ventriloquists.
Did women get the ventriloquist’s name originally, or was it an invented identity?
It came from the word ventriloquist. It wasn’t an invented name until the 1940’s, when Ventriloquia started selling instruments and ventriloquism moved to its own line. Today, they are known as Ventriloquists.
