That’s what we need to focus on now. That is, we need to stop taking it to a level that goes beyond “here are all the things in the world which are not true.” Because there is too much of that in our culture. It is a huge cultural issue in our country right now, a problem of cultural imperialism.
One thing I’m also trying to get clear about is that this isn’t an issue of some “radical” individual or group in this country. So if I had said, “That flag is racist, let’s all go back and look it up and look for the flag on the ground and take pictures” or that it was a white supremacist who made that flag, I would be attacked for bigotry. But because it is one individual, an individual with no historical affiliation to white supremacy, who has done this, it can be called a cultural issue. Because, in fact, it is a white supremacist flag. And so, we should not be doing this to a whole group of people just because it is about one individual. There are many groups around the world with the same flag, and we should be working together to see what they would do differently and how we can learn from that. So, as I said, that is the key: The context of the flag has nothing to do with racism.
MELISSA HANNITY: Do we have a way to reach out to them?
SEN. TOM COUSINS: I have a good sense of who the issue is with young people like Dylann Roof. I believe most of the people who are doing this at that particular time in our society would agree that this is not the way we deal with racism. We can’t expect them to change. Because the thing we have to do, and I’m not the only person that’s saying this; I spoke to a number of people who said this a couple of weeks ago, is that what we have to do is build the kind of support networks that are just out there for them, if they want to change these things. There are ways to do this, and we need to work through all the obstacles that we’ve got; we need to get the messages out to the people that it’s not good to be a racist. We need to do some of the things in law enforcement that we’re looking at: we need to look at school-based crisis teams where we can do some of our best work with young people. But if we really want
