How did a schoolboy create one of the most bizarre designs ever designed? It’s a truly fascinating story. But in this interview we focus on the creation of Timon, my favorite of Fator’s creations.
Terry is an avid toy collector and designer. In his spare time, he writes a column on the topic of toys at www.toylist.com. It’s a must read for young toy collectors. So, when he wasn’t talking, he was sitting with us in his studio. Timon Fator: “I’ve designed over 100. It’s been a real challenge but I’ve done some of them!”
How do you design an entire set? Did you try to fit everything in the one model or did you put some things on for scale? Terry Fator is the inventor and designer of Timon Fator. He was born in 1945 in the tiny village of Chur, in the Russian Far East, and is now 83 years old. Timon was a huge fan of toy companies and dreamed of becoming a toy designer someday.
It was not until he was a teenager that Terry realized that a child’s mind is just as complex as an adult’s. He had one of the best teachers ever. When an old lady came up to him one day with a box of old children’s toys he was intrigued because she had taught him to play with them. He picked out a couple of dolls for Terry and he started building the toy. He designed Timon to be a happy little boy but with a sense of humor. The original Timon is so lifelike to Terry that the fans at Fairway are still telling stories of how they met their first Timon! He was also one of Timon’s best friends because of the relationship he developed with a little boy named Ivan.
Fator’s toys quickly made it to world market. Fairway went out of business in the early 1970’s but he has continued to produce original designs and has also built several of the largest toy companies. One of the biggest names in the world of toy making is Hasbro Toys but Terry Fator never agreed to let one of its toy designs be on an American toy. He never had access to the toys from the Hasbro factory. Hasbro Toys has only had its toy line for a few years now and they have not been able to capitalize on Terry’s skills at designing a real man to fill his world.
