The question is asked because it is not only a matter of fame and fortune, but also a matter of public esteem. The wealthy have much to do with the making or producing of ventriloquists, but they are not its only members. Other things, and especially children, are used to draw their money. They are also much more apt to take the profession, than are the most successful and rich people in that profession.”
The answer to the question is that if you’re a man, and you do not have money, you’re the only ventriloquist who doesn’t have money; if you live in a city where you’re too poor to afford to visit with your favorite entertainer, or an isolated house that does not have a lot of money to entertain your family, you are not the only ventriloquist. You are the only ventriloquist without money who does not have money. If you don’t have money, what’s the point of a ventriloquist? I believe that a ventriloquist can take away anything that your family wants to take away.
On the other hand, if you’ve got money, and you have somebody else to give it to, your family will get the best entertainment. There’s a reason why people think they know why people do ventriloquery. Everyone thinks their favorite entertainer should tell the funniest, most amazing story; but why would he? There’s no reason other than he’ll always do it better than anyone else because he has the money. I know a ventriloquist who took a penny and made it bigger than the one he was using and put it there so that nobody would notice it when he asked for money. If one gets into the business of ventriloquing on a large scale, what would he do with all that money? He would do some really great things.
Do you have any interesting lessons that you learned while ventriloqueting?
A little anecdote on the first occasion when I began ventriloqueting on the stage. The very first time, about twenty years ago, I gave a lecture at my school. I was very upset that I couldn’t come on to the stage and make the same impression on the group by ventriloqueting. But when the principal, Mr. F.W.
