According to John Storck, one of the most experienced experts on ventriloquists, the process is very similar to that of a magician.
“In the beginning, the ventriloquist has to be a very good performer,” Storck said. “He needs to be able to read off the cards, move their heads in a certain way, make the correct noises.” At certain points, he said, the ventriloquist may be able to play the cards like a wizard. Other times, Storck said, the performer gets into a “tension, trancelike state that makes it much easier for him.”
“When someone is able to do the same things many times without fail,” Storck said, “as they go into more rigorous classes, they start to learn better tricks, and they become more expert at the game.”
Storck said this process usually takes about one year before somebody is “familiarized” with the techniques.
“This is a very complex art, very sophisticated art,” Storck said.
What’s the point of the Ventriloquist?
Some ventriloquists say that the most fun and rewarding part of ventriloquying is not practicing alone, but that ventriloquists also create new and unique entertainment for the public.
“The fun takes place when you have somebody there with you who understands the concept and they’re trying to teach it. They’re kind of the glue that holds it all together,” said Storck.
One of the greatest joys of the ventriloquy can be found in the surprise when strangers suddenly walk into a room.
“You’re surprised by their reaction to the dummy,” said Storck. “They all have a great reaction to it. You want to get the dummy out of there, and it’s kind of fun to have it there and see what happens.”
Ventriloquers, however, take the enjoyment of their role serious. They don’t like to be in the audience.
“When we put the dummy on a stage, we’re always careful. Usually, we’re on a stage that is big enough to have four or 5 of us, or even four or 5 performers. The dummy must be really small, and as long as the dummy stays hidden, people are not going to notice him,” said Storck.
