In the Masters’ early days, these interactions were strictly business. But as the business went on—and with it, the number of people in the Master’s office doubled—people began to take over. “Everyone got bored,” says Mr. Masters. “There were people who would sit at his desk and talk for an hour, who knew what he was doing and knew the secrets. People would talk to me. People would go through my back pocket, and they would bring me their money. Then they walked out of my office and that was it. I didn’t really think about it at the time.”
It was something he took to heart. He decided to write a book about his life. His book had a premise he’d decided to explore: the relationship between business and relationships.
“Before you do anything with someone, you have to give them the opportunity to say ‘yes’ or ‘no. If I give my money to that guy, he should also give him my job.'” That’s the Master’s philosophy.
Mr. Masters and his wife, Carol Ann, have two children: John and Elizabeth. Elizabeth joined the Masters in 1985 after the death of her mother. At the time, he worked on the “Art of the Deal.”
The masters did not have children of their own, nor did they have family weddings, which Mr. Masters often hosted. “I was a guy who wanted things to come naturally,” he says.
The Masters’ business model, “A Little Less Conversation,” is built around the idea that in order to thrive in life, you have to spend more time with your loved ones, less time with others and spend a lot of time talking. “The main focus in this book is going about your own work,” Mr. Masters explains. “So that you stay in touch emotionally with what’s going on in your own life and in the lives of people all over the city.”
