You don’t even need to move your mouth. What I know is this. You can talk out loud to yourself for about 100,000 milliseconds or more.
You might think it’s a little scary, but if the only people that are around that can hear you are you and those listening, it’s pretty effective. And then, all of a sudden I can say things like, “Hello, my little friend,” which means, “Hello, I’m the one that wrote this.”
Why do you use these tools that are called “speech recognition”?
It’s like if you were to look at your phone right now and you have a picture of your house right here on your phone and it’s all photos of trees and other flowers. The first time you see it, you’ll just know it’s someone else’s house. With speech recognition, you can recognize faces within a picture that you’ve been studying.
If you can only have, say, 10 photos of your house that’s taken in the past 10 years, you would be able to see a photo of your old kitchen as well as your old bedroom, which may have been your bedroom at the time you took those photos. You can identify a face in a picture of your home 10 to 20 times more easily than you can a photo of an object.
Is there anyone in society who doesn’t want to be known?
People would rather not be known than be known. You know what I mean? And even if you’re not the people that want to be known, there still are people out there looking out for that.
Do you really feel like you are helping the world better understand them?
I get a sense that most of people in our society don’t really understand their own selves. So I think being able to share with people who do understand them something about themselves—be it with their words, or their actions, or how they think—makes a lot of difference.
You also talk a lot about how the Internet is enabling the spread of ideas, as if it can help make the world a better place. That sounds incredibly powerful and inspiring. Are you willing to bet you can give us something of that power?
I would say 100 percent, no question. My goal all along has been to change people’s behavior and attitudes. So, for me, that starts with me and my ideas.
