With the help of the same mouth movements that I did on-screen? “Oh, that’s a tricky question. I don’t think that’s possible.” He’s right.
As with all things, puppetry is so much more than just puppets. You have to understand what that means, and how that affects both performers, and the audience. When you’re talking to someone who is doing something for the first time and you say, ‘Who are you?’ You need to know what you say before you ask a question. You have to know what the other person is talking about, and how to convey something that they’re discussing.
When I talked to my partner on the show when we were filming it — there were 12 actors on that. He’d brought in his own puppet to do the voice and we thought that was amazing. He was just in the dark about the technical details of the puppet. He wasn’t as far gone with puppetry as we thought he was. “That’s really pretty!” “That’s a very cool puppet. What’s it from?” That was interesting, because it was the first time we’d ever used a puppet and not the final version.
That’s not even how the show got made. That’s not how puppetry got made before. When you talk to people at a show, they don’t even think there’s such a thing. For one, no one sees puppet shows and they don’t even think about puppets, to be honest. They just see films and television. And you have a movie in front of you, and it’s about a guy trying to convince his wife that he’s a good man. All that’s really happening, isn’t it?
But when you start talking to people who do puppetry, it’s like, “Yes! Sure. That’s what we do. I see it all.” That is probably one of the biggest legacies of the show is what we did not know. But with this new thing that I’m doing — “Frozen” — I get to explore another one of those, and I don’t know if any other series is going to go through this transition without somebody coming in and wanting to talk about it.
I do love the show. It’s just a little harder to explain about it to people because there are so many layers to it. And that’s what’s so amazing about it. But I think it’s also the strength of this show, because we take a moment
