When it comes to the Internet of Things, there’s no greater target than one of the most popular gadgets of all time — a fridge. That’s because if you don’t understand how the device functions, it can wreak havoc. So much so that Apple has developed an app to help you keep your fridge in proper order, while Apple Watch can take the reins for some of that heavy lifting.
A few years back, the iPhone got connected to the WiFi network of an entire community of people. At the time, this was a small step forward to make our gadgets more friendly to one another and to our surroundings. However, as the community grew larger, those connections were becoming a serious security threat — for starters, the networks being used were not protected with any kind of encryption to protect our data and personal information.
Apple made some small attempts to crack down on the community for their own profit. However, it was far too slow compared to what they should have done in the first place. So in hopes to be more proactive in our security needs, last year (2015-2017) Apple partnered with Zimperium, a start-up that specializes in secure internet-connected devices. These products are actually pretty amazing, and can be easily controlled using the Apple TV or Apple Pay.
It turns out though, that some of these devices had trouble connecting to their own networks at all. It’s like a whole new world of privacy has been opened up to the world. This is not your daddy’s Wi-Fi but rather a completely separate network entirely. But just for good measure, as well, there is now an app specifically for keeping your fridge in order.
And of course, if it weren’t for those pesky criminals out there who want access to your data and device, they could get all kinds of data about your fridge and you.
