OTTAWA — The Canadian government has approved a package deal to sell four Russian fighters to Iraq, the latest installment in a complex arms sales program designed to keep Canada in the fight in the Middle East.
The package was approved June 30, just days after the Liberals came into power and the previous government had been trying to secure $7.9-billion worth of contracts to sell the F-35 fighter planes.
But the new Liberal government is determined to stick to its commitment to the military and it has now approved another $1.6 billion for defence purchases.
According to The Canadian Press, the package includes four Sukhoi Su-30MKI multirole fighter aircraft and four Su-35 combat aircraft.
The fighter jets will go to the Iraqi Air Force to replace its older Su-25-based fleet along with the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The contract was originally slated for more than $6 billion, but has been approved with the government keeping the money for the new aircraft.
The F-35 deal was originally intended to be a massive purchase as it promised to replace the aging CF-18 fighter jets at a huge annual cost.
But the Liberal government announced on June 13, just five days into their new mandate, that they would cut the costs of buying new F-35s by as much as $6 billion.
That left the price tag for the new planes at $12 billion. It was supposed to be a major procurement for the Trudeau government, but the Liberals have repeatedly criticized then-prime minister Stephen Harper for spending taxpayers money so badly.
