It’s not easy. I have a lot of things to keep in mind. I’m using a new animation system with more freedom, and using puppets isn’t easy because they’re complex. In fact, I was surprised how difficult it was to get a real puppet to animate. The system can only handle a few hundred puppets and then there’s some animation lag. I also had some problems with my animation software, and I was having trouble getting it to sync up with the system. On top of that, my computer is really old. It’s not even updated to the latest version. It just has slow hard drive drives. So I was having these real problems.
What’s the animation process like?
Puppets have a few functions. They’re used to get your facial expressions on them, and that’s great, and they’re used to move and react to the things that go on, because the things they move, and the things they react to, are going to be different in each scene.
That’s cool!
If it goes on, you can kind of feel the movement, but if you don’t, you’ll know it. And, if you do get it to kind of work, there’s still lots of stuff going on. If you’re doing a fight scene, and there’s a big explosion and there’s a lot going on, and you’re walking around—you’re almost not even aware you’re moving, and it’s fun to watch because he’s moving.
That was awesome, and I’m so glad to know it! And when I have something to say, I have to explain what’s going on. Then we go from there.
How does that fit in with the style of the other characters?
Well, yes, because it’s so much fun to see. The way I’ve done it is by getting into the character more and seeing the motions of the movements, seeing the way he moves—or how he reacts to the things going on. In the fight scenes, I’m doing a lot of movements. So my style comes out because of that. There are a lot of characters that look much better or feel more believable with a little bit more work—things that are easier. In other characters, you have to be able to tell them apart and not be caught off guard, you know. When they come to the set, I have to go out with the puppets and see things in the real actors eyes
