You don’t have to go out of your way to get a taste of a new wine. We know that everyone who’s ever had an evening out at the bar—and, well, most everyone who’s ever been to the bar—has probably tasted something from one of the few wines for which we have actual, hard data.
It turns out that we have access to wine that is only available in certain places that only have a small fraction of us (mostly a lot of us, actually). It turns out we can taste a lot of things when we aren’t there. Here are the places where you can sample wine like you never have before.
1. Tired of the same old place? Take a step outside. If you’re living in NYC, visit an East Village bar and drink from a wine list that’s only available there. If you live on the West Coast, swing by a Seattle bar and go home with wine that you really haven’t had before.
2. If you’re a wine connoisseur, have a look around the other places where you buy wine and see what the difference is. We’re going to stick to New York because that’s where you can have the highest number of wines with the highest potential for change (and where there are a ton of wines in very limited supply).
3. Try some of the wine that you don’t like from a tasting menu. There’s nothing like ordering a bottle of a wine you know you hate to have a real experience.
4. If you’re a wine professional, join one of the great seminars we’ve run (in-house or at industry events like Wine Business Conference). Wine experts share a common understanding of the wine product, talk about the wines you want to see (but don’t like), and give practical tips on how to make the most out of it (the only real exception is if something is an absolute disaster–I’d be hesitant to recommend eating wine that I made myself at a wine conference)
5. When you’re tasting, have fun. As we said above, having a good time is the best medicine. When you’re tasting, have fun. When you’re tasting, have fun.
6. If you’ve never had a night out at the bar and you’re a wine lover, try one of the many different wines (and food) that they make available from the tasting menus.
