This is a video of a dummy being used by the US military as “a weapon of choice when using a rifle.”
In its research into the use of the Dummy in “the battlefield,” the US military used dummy to test out the ability to fire a suppressed rifle within a weapon’s “scope.”
The dummy was equipped with a 10mm pistol, a 10mm rifle, and a M60 machinegun. Each dummy had an individual scope and its own trigger.
From their report: “Once the scope and trigger systems were in place and the rifle was locked and loaded, the dummy pulled a round out of the magazine. The dummy and rifle could not be fired at the same time. With their target in its sights, the soldier and gunner looked closely at the dummy. The dummy moved with the weapon in response to the trigger pull and was not armed or aiming at the target.”
The dummy also fired an M60 machinegun bolt action rifle to test the accuracy of a dummy firing multiple rounds at a short range.
The US military claims the dummy was less than 1:10 and did not suffer any damage to the rifle it was being used with.
“All of the dummy’s components, such as the pistol, the rifle, the trigger, and the trigger mechanism, were damaged by the dummy’s firing,” the report said.
But while the US military claims it did not sustain any more than minor damage through the dummy’s use, it’s also not the first time this has happened:
[The] Department of Homeland Security has done the same thing with a mock sniper rifle and a mock machinegun and a dummy was shot and even hit when it tried to fire a dummy, according to a Washington State Department of Defense report….
A similar incident with dummy fire took place in 2004. US military snipers found an F-111 mock jet that had been used to simulate a plane in combat. A dummy could not be fired and it was fired at a mock rifle in the mock up.
While there is likely some truth to this incident, a study by the University of Chicago’s Graduate School of Journalism has found that in more than 1/3 of the more than 600 reported cases of dummy gun fires, the bullets were actually fired into the dummy when it tried to fire.
