We have a huge puppet workshop going on right now. The puppetry room is full of puppets, it’s really well organized. We all collaborate, so there’s a bunch of different puppets that we’ll create and we play around with various ideas. There’s different things going on inside each one to make sure there’s consistency in that design. The different things we might do in a puppet are pretty diverse. But there’s always one. Usually at a particular location, we’re making, ‘I want a set of legs.’ Then we find out we can’t have those legs. Usually I’m right there with a little sheet of paper in front of me. So it’s like a big puzzle, and we’re all pulling things apart. We’ll take off a leg and we’ll change the way it’s drawn, add a leg, and we’ll do some other stuff. That’s how one’s made at this workshop.
I was wondering how many people do you have at the Puppet Studio, and how many people stay after to work on the puppets? My wife used to do the work, and she’s stayed through all these years — I’m the one who has had to call her up and ask when they’re getting their own time there. She works from home; she’s a stay-at-home mom. She doesn’t have an office. I haven’t gone on any other jobs of late, so we’re really dependent on our family. I don’t care how good the job is or what else I can do to make it more appealing, but I’ve had enough experience working in the field to know that working in a job that depends on time is a bad deal. It’s never going to be rewarding. If I wanted that kind of job, I would have got into that industry. I know that much better now. I used to think it was good work. But it really isn’t. I love what I do, and I want other people to feel good about what they do. Some of the time there’s nothing you can do that will make the job better; it’ll just suck because nobody is there to do it. Working in a job that depends on time is just sad.
If you had to say one thing about what makes this work, what would it be? We love it, and we don’t care what the money is and how good it is. We’re all having fun here. I love it this way. I’ve been doing this a long time and doing
