What is the origin of “to open mouth?” It is common in the Bible and other ancient sources for Hebrews to “open their mouths” to ask questions or to give feedback about what a Hebrew speaker has said. However, the term is very unclear as to whether or not all of the other elements of the instruction apply.
If a Bible scholar wants to know more about the ancient Hebrew practice of opening mouths, it is very difficult to find a definitive answer. Scholars have made a number of attempts to reconstruct what these “open mouth” instructions meant (as well as some who have done no better). There is no general consensus on them. I have looked in vain for a clear, written account of this practice; I tried to track down a list written in the first century, but I could find nothing.
There is a good description of this practice in a commentary by the Babylonian Talmud (a translation of Greek in the Talmud’s original Aramaic): An ancient Israelite had been teaching a man to recite blessings (kohanim) when the man was supposed to take his mouth from his lips and give his eyes to God (Exodus 12:10). He took his eyes and eyes then placed them to God’s eyes (as in the illustration at the start of this entry), and then asked God: “May your eyes be opened, and may my right hand lead you, as you have led others into the way of life? May your heart guide you! May your feet lead you—may your hands be free from any oppression! May there be no obstacle in your way!”
In this instance, the man was speaking to God. To begin with he was talking not from his lips, but from his heart (the “open mouth!”) and from his eyes which were to meet with God’s eyes (the “open mouth”).
