I know the answer. They’re little plastic things, that would go through one of those wires you used to make you stand up, and then a man would have to be standing behind you, on his hands, so you’d have to do a mouth-to-mouth act right before they started playing with you. That was called a mouth-to-mouth dummy. It would take the words you said and they would translate it into this little, silly little dummy. So I’ve been calling these people ventriloquists for a long time.
There were these two puppeteers, one with his little dummy, and then there was another guy, who was this incredible juggler, who could juggle three, four or sometimes seven, eight different characters at a time.
That’s when they would say: “Okay. You’ve got to say something about what you’ll tell us. Do you like to sing?”
I love when they come up with silly names, like “Drinking Buddy.”
That used to be an old name. “Drinking Buddy” was my baby.
I’ve read that these people thought they were in some way responsible for your life choices.
No! I had nothing to do with that.
You had nothing to do with that or your life choices?
No. I had some influences. The biggest influences were my family and my friends. I was raised by my mom, and she was always in my life. They’d say: “Your dad’s in law school!” (laughter) My dad went to law school after she had passed away. It was a wonderful education and she was really happy for me. But I think it was more of a responsibility—especially being raised by somebody. My dad and my grandparents weren’t very educated, so they would always tell me that. They always had to say “don’t worry” that much. “You’ve learned better than these people!” If it was someone in authority, no, they probably weren’t going to tell us how to be. Because we were kids. But if we were in the company of other folks, that was when we had the influence on our own lives and what we should do. It was nice having these folks to go up and say, “Just like us.”
