There hasn’t been a release of information about The Ringer’s coverage of the National Football League yet. Fator hasn’t had a regular job since he was fired from the Vikings in August 2012, and that news was first reported this past July by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He had been at the helm of a division that lost a combined 12 games the previous two years to the Cardinals, Saints, and 49ers. Fator was given $1.25 million in salary alone last year and he made $2.2 million in 2014.
Fator is the first head coach at Nebraska since 2005. The Huskers went 15-1 last year. They went from not having a winning season to the playoffs.
How long do the NFI’s operate?
The NFI is a nonprofit foundation. It funds the operations of sports teams all over the country. It is not affiliated with the NFL. The NFI currently has six teams in the NFL: NFL franchises New England Patriots (NFI), Detroit Lions ($1.25 million), Dallas Cowboys ($2 million), Indianapolis Colts ($1.25 million), New York Jets ($2.25 million), and Miami Dolphins ($2 million). They have no plans for a seventh team.

In the NFL it is common for coaches to keep a tight lid on their salaries and not release them. The reason for some of these things is likely that the coaches are not paid enough to live on without the money from the league. (They tend to have very high salaries, too.) In other situations it’s because the salary of the head coach is guaranteed and any additional payments could hurt a team’s flexibility.
As a head coach, you’re essentially a CEO of the team — and they probably take a lot of pride in their own performance. Their salaries may be very comfortable for them, but their players just as much — or maybe more.
Many of these coaches don’t even have a team yet, and some of them have been fired with very little fanfare. They should be taken care of by their teams and their communities — and the NFI is here to help them out.
