The first recorded ventriloquism is from a Frenchman named Michel Dupuy, at the “H.S.” Theater in New York City on May 4, 1903.[20]

The First Ventrilobotomized Person
Michel’s first ventriloquism occurred at the “H.S.” Theatre in New York City on May 4, 1903, when he was playing a ventriloquist named Vincent at “H.S” in Central Park, Brooklyn. After Vincent’s death, it was decided that there should be an exhibition of ventriloquists from all over the world who’d managed to get their mouths into the air by “hanging a wire between their legs.”
When the show was about to begin, a young man approached Dupuy in the middle of the act to ask if he could be present. Dupuy told him no, thinking that he did not want to entertain the guest. He proceeded to talk to Vincent for some time, asking him if he wanted to talk. When Vincent was ready to ask for a drink or cigar, Dupuy let the young man hang him, saying that he had some coffee or a cigar in the kitchen. When the ventriloquist had made up his mind to die, Dupuy jumped aboard his death-tossing board, and managed to hold it fast while the young man jumped off.

At that point, the young man on the ventriloquism board stopped breathing and was pronounced dead. Dupuy himself jumped off with great force, but found himself falling to the ground as well.

Michel Dupuy’s second ventriloquism occurred on June 1, 1905 at a ventriloquist in New Jersey and he got it even worse than the one at Hartford. But, in the New York Theater, the ventriloquist had to remain suspended for most of the performance.
