Shortstop. It just feels better. There is a different release point and feel in the arm, which can make it feel natural to them even without the arm curve and the elbow angle changes.
There are pros and cons of hitting and pitching against a ball down the middle and on the ground:
The pitching side is safer with a hard ball out
The fielding side goes first at any time, so there is little to get upset about (unless you’ve been doing it since you were in the eighth grade) since it happens so rarely.
The hitting side has to watch the ball go in, so there’s always a risk to a ball going in right when they think they’re going to hit it.
The infielders don’t know what to do if you throw it on the ground (i.e. the batter hits it into the outfield, in line with you)
But the more you think about it and try to use it to benefit your team, the better it becomes – you’ll become more efficient in all aspects of your game. When I go to my fielders and explain the mechanics of it, they are always amazed by how easy it is (and how easy hitting off a ball on the ground can be). You get a great advantage from throwing it or getting a hit. You have to learn them – but not too much of what they are already doing without having to learn them!
How did you decide on this stance when starting out as a catcher vs. being a hitter and learning pitching?
When I was a pitcher I would have tried to throw like I’m a hitter, but I think I prefer it here [as a catcher]. I was already used to working from a position so I can control it better, I don’t have to change anything. It’s still my normal stance too, so I still do the same things I do as a pitcher, but maybe more to make it easier for them too.
How has this philosophy changed the way you work?
The more pitchers work in that direction I realized to how many things must we think to work our game. There also must be some adjustments to the pitching motion. The harder I work to hit a baseball, the faster I can throw. I think that the more we work our way that way the better off we all look, both as players and as a team. I want to feel good about how we have worked to increase our success. It’s not just about
