It’s the first thing he says about the new Waltz-Rizzoli-Cabaret act, which he will do only in a live performance, in front of 1,700 guests gathered for a private dinner. He’s got more than his share of money to make.
That’s the first hint that Waltz is planning to go on a major, country-wide tour, in support of the new material. He tells the audience that Waltz “will perform a solo violin concerto, then a new album with a double album on the road together, and also with the Chicago Symphony and some other groups.”
Then he delivers this unexpected, and completely unexpected, news: “I’m leaving for Italy on Saturday. It’s my final concert. I’ve heard that this will be my last solo concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall, on opening day, September 16th, in Paris, and I’m not going to go there. In fact, the last concert was in Paris. And I really, really want to go there.”
When the audience is stunned by his decision, Waltz says, “I feel I was given the opportunity and the responsibility to share the last years with my audience — to do something that they didn’t know they needed, they needed and it’s beautiful to see.”
At that point, the audience is so angry Waltz is going to do more than perform solo concerts for “the audience,” that there’s an immediate backlash. When we look back a few minutes later, Waltz is standing behind a curtain, watching from the stage as people are running out the doors and shouting “I can’t believe this” toward his direction. His audience is also outraged and angry.
His fans begin shouting outside as well. They are yelling loudly in the street on the street where most of Walt Disney Concert Hall’s seats are. It’s not the way that the audience is used to seeing the company’s most popular performers.
As I watch, they’re all running to get into the crowd and they yell and yell, “Hey, Mickey! What’s the problem? Stop running away from us!” They know they have just had a show of power and authority — of power in their eyes — put on by Mickey Mouse.
The crowd does not like that, and what’s more, they are not about to give up. Soon we find ourselves walking in circles outside as they shout and shout. Eventually, two police officers with microphones capture on video what
