What does a filmmaker? – Film Art Hub

The first thing that has to be said about the film is that I am an individual, not a collective film-maker. That sounds pretty obvious, except I am the last film-maker I have been in, I am the last writer/director in New York. I’ve only had two weeks of editing before. So, you’ve got to be very, very careful with your money and your attention – a lot of people don’t have time to make movies. And I am not a big fan of self-indulgence. You cannot just want to do something you do every other day that is the first thing on everyone’s mind.

How did you develop the idea for this film?

Basically, I heard a story – one of my oldest friends, who I met in an elevator, had a very long-running television show called “The Librarians” because he had a long-running radio show, and that really became the inspiration for the movie “The Librarians”. I’ve heard similar stories for a long time about how we are, as filmmakers, in our third, and hopefully last, film we could do with our money. “Can we do this now, or not? Yes, I can afford to buy the camera, I can afford to do this, I can afford to do that”. And I want to do this, and I am scared to do something else. But I want to explore a new medium, a medium that I didn’t do before, by making a film in one medium, to see if I really have what it takes, you know? And when I did do this project in radio, I wanted to see how much difference that could make in my production. If you’re making a show about someone you didn’t know and I don’t know, you have to ask yourself the “Is this really the place for this?” question. When a new medium comes up and you need a different medium, it is really, really hard to figure out how to make a difference in the medium. And I was never sure I had that experience. And because it felt like I really knew the material, and I didn’t really know anything else, I thought maybe I could do better. And I thought, “Well, maybe if I just do this for about five minutes, I might figure out why I didn’t know it all the time.”

What was the difference between radio and film in your development of this movie?
