We asked all of our guitarists to rank the most used chords per musical genre. The results, unsurprisingly, show that most guitarists prefer the 5 most common chords in rock ‘n’ roll, with only a very small number saying they like the 7 most common chords in rock ‘n’ roll.
How do you play guitar chords?
Chords are usually played on guitar’s three highest scale degrees:
Major Pentatonic – Minor Pentatonic (or 5 semitones apart)
Minor Pentatonic – Major Pentatonic
Major Pentatonic – Minor Pentatonic
(Note that many rock n’ roll chords sound the same, but these are the three major patterns – a minor pentatonic chord sounds the same as a major triad chord, and a major pentatonic chord sounds the same as a blues scale tone.)
Do you find the most commonly used chords are easy or hard to play?
Chords are, in general, easy to play, but tricky to play for some. Most guitarists use at least some chords, but it’s not impossible to learn them all the same as these rock charts show. If a chord is difficult to play you should try out a few combinations, rather than just working on one chord at a time. Find one chord you like the first time you play it – that is, if you ever want to start playing it again – and use it every time without fail. The best way to find chords to use each time you play is to look up an established chord phrase that you already know in the fretboard.
Which instrument do you practice most?
