If you open the brush file from another layer’s adjustment layer, you can select any of the properties – opacity, blend mode, etc. – to be used to apply the paint operation to the image. For example, I have the effect “Paint Over Water” and will apply the paint operation to the water as it passes by. You can see how with the adjustment layer selected by the button, I can start the painting operation.
The other method that is useful is to set the brush size to the value specified by the image thumbnail image (like “32″). In my example above, if I set the brush to 32 in order to paint the water, you may see the water get pushed in some places, particularly near the end. To see how, click on the red button “Redraw.” From there, you can see which portions of the water are painted over by the brush:
